Chapter 21
“Wake up.” At first I thought it was Noah and smiled as I tried to push myself awake.
“You stayed all night?” I asked groggily, “See I knew you couldn’t keep away,”
“It’s time for your training, I’ll wait outside.” That definitely wasn’t Noah, guess I was dreaming. I tried to gather my thoughts as quickly as I could and opened my eyes a crack. There was no one there so I ventured to sit up, taking a good look around my room. Everything was in its place, so, either the party animals had respected my decision and the KEEP OUT sign on my door, or, it was that Noah had stuck to his word and had gotten the team to clean up.
I was in a big t-shirt Noah must have found and put on me and was just contemplating a shower, when the words and the voice came back to me. It felt like a dream, that voice in my ear, but I needed to be sure. I stepped onto the cold floor, deciding immediately that I needed a rug. The ‘dream person’ had said they’d be waiting outside, so slipping on a pair of sweatpants, I ignored checking anywhere else and went out onto the patio.
It was almost turning into another night, as the sun sank behind the trees. I hadn’t noticed, because the heavy drapes inside had been drawn. I was surprised at how long I’d slept and seeing no one but a few people down by the lake, decided I really had been dreaming.
“I need a shower,” I said to no one and made my way back inside to do just that.
“Say nothing. See how easy it was for me to trap you? We must change that.” An arm was gripping my neck from behind and I could almost kick myself for being caught off — guard, again.
“Tai?” I managed to squeak out, but the hold on me got tighter,
“I said, say nothing,” he whispered, in almost growl-like fashion deep into my ear. He released me, unhooking his arm and simultaneously turning me to face him. Tai’s cold stare made you feel that he was looking past you, but I knew better than to try anything foolish. “First, I want to see how fast you are. You are too slow, we must improve that.” His words stung.
When I’d trained with Adelaide and Roy, they’d been hard on me, but had understood that I had never fought with another of my kind before and had no real clue what to expect, or how to retaliate. They’d been patient and helpful. Tai it seemed, would be nothing more than a jerk.
“You can’t expect me to build Rome in a day,” I grumbled. His expression did not change,
“We are not in Rome and I told you not to speak.” He hit me in the face. It was a blow that had it been a little harder, my jaw would have been shattered. Had I not been clutching my jaw as it throbbed with the pain, I might have been crying out instead.
